Pupils of Whindow-Asakae Methodist Primary and Kindergarten in Sekondi-Takoradi are currently studying under trees.
This has been necessitated by the collapse of the classrooms which hitherto provided shelter for their studies.
The roofing sheets of the classrooms were ripped off during one of the stormy rains in the city. Fortunately, the school was then on break and no casualties were recorded.
Despite several appeals to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana Education Service (GES), no help has come forth.
Their inaction has compelled the school authorities to conduct teaching and learning under trees while anxiously awaiting a lasting solution to the problem.
Speaking to The Finder in an interview, Madam Elizabeth Atombo, head teacher of the kindergarten, confirmed that five classrooms had their roofing sheets ripped off following the storm.
Following this, she said, the management of the school, upon reopening, worked out an estimate for re-roofing of the affected classrooms and sent it to authorities of GES.
Unfortunately, she said, no action had been taken, adding that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), which is responsible for aiding disaster victims, had also not responded to their plight.
“They have visited, promised to send everything to the area for refurbishment of the classes but have never backed their promises with any concrete action,” she stressed.
The headmistress further said the pupils are forced to stay at home any time the rains threaten to fall, “and given the fact that we are currently in the rainy season, you can well imagine what we are going through.”
