Investigations into UCC clash begin

Investigation has begun into circumstances that led to the clash between students of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and their counterparts from the University of Ghana (UG), Legon and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

On March 17, 2017, acts of vandalism were visited on the Oguaa Hall during the Hall Week celebration of the Atlantic Hall at UCC.

A statement signed and issued by the acting Director of the Directorate of Public Affairs of the university, Major Kofi Baah-Bentum (retd), said “Investigations have started in earnest and we wish to assure all stakeholders, especially parents and taxpayers, that due process would be followed and the perpetrators brought to book.”

What happened?

The statement explained that preliminary investigations indicated that “the atrocities were committed by guest students from the Unity Hall of KNUST and the Commonwealth Hall, UG.”

It said the incident left two students critically wounded and others with minor injuries.

The statement said the affected students were reported to be responding to treatment.

Vehicles, including the hall bus of Oguaa Hall, were damaged and the hall’s buildings also had all its glasses broken.

The police were immediately called in to maintain law and order.

The statement said since then, calm had been restored and teaching and learning were ongoing.
