Shops razed down in Odorkor fire

ksi-fire2Several shops and structures housing hundreds at Busia Junction in Odorkor, Accra have been razed down in a fire that is said to have started around 10:30 pm Sunday, March 12.

The cause of fire is yet to be known. But according to 3FM’s Jason Amoo “everything has been burnt to the ground”. Victims blamed the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) for the extent of damage as they claim the personnel responded to distress calls too late.

“The [Ghana National] Fire Service came too late,” a victim told Grace Asare on 3FM Monday morning. “I was even sleeping when someone was screaming ‘fire, fire’,” she said in Akan. “I had to break into a neighbour’s room to escape with my baby.” A former Assembly member for the area, K Gyasi, also blamed the fire officers for the extent of damage.

“It took them a long time getting here, about 1 hour and 30 minutes,” the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary aspirant said. He indicated that the area is predominantly occupied by supporters of the NPP and so he had several calls on Sunday. He put the number of persons displaced at 200. No lives have been reported lost.
