Accra Technical University lecturers withdraw services

Lecturers at the Accra Technical University have withdrawn their services Tuesday morning as a result of poor conditions of service in the school. 

The situation, they noted, is dire to the extent that some students are compelled by circumstance to sit on tables during lecture hours. Numbering about 50, the lecturers suspended all forms of teaching activities to force management of the school to address what they describe as nuisance. The lecturers who constitute the local chapter of Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana said the students’ population far outnumbers chairs in the lecture halls, reason why students are forced to sit on tables during lecture hours.

They also said the urinals in the school produce unbearable stench, which is not good for the health of the students. Moreover, teaching aids, including projector, public address systems, bulbs and wall sockets have not been functioning for years, the claimed. The lecturers said on September 4 this year, the Association served management with final notification to fix the broken down facilities but to no avail.

Chairman of the Technical University Teachers’ Association Of Ghana, Dr. Jones Adjei Ntiamoah told a press conference on Tuesday, “We think that the management we have is not proactive.” According to him, most of the management members have been lecturers before and know the problems facing the school, and was therefore surprised that they tend to forget about the challenges of teachers when they get to the management level. Dr. Jones Adjei Ntiamoah admitted the Association is no longer following due process to the get problems resolved because earlier processes did not yield any meaningful result. Although school authorities have begun addressing the lecturers concerns, they have vowed not to return to the classrooms until their grievances are fully addressed.
