NPP – Civil disobedience over Charlotte Osei’s removal must be punished

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the country’s security agencies to deal with any individual or group of persons, who will take advantage of the removal the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission EC to cause trouble.

The opposition National Democratic Congress NDC has vowed to stage a massive demonstration over the removal of the EC Chairperson and her two deputies after they were removed from office for misbehavior and incompetence.

The NDC is of the view that the removal is an attempt by the NPP government to rig the 2020 elections.

Speaking at a press conference today [Tuesday], acting General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, said the removal of the EC boss was done in accordance with Ghana’s constitution.

“Some of them are proceeding to call for civil disobedience and chaos in this country, as registration of their protest against this development. The NPP, first of all, condemns all such reckless and potentially treasonable comments and proceed to call on the police and the other relevant security agencies to act accordingly as provided by law in other not to jeopardize the peace and security of our dear country,” he said.

Last week, President Akufo-Addo removed the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwaa from office.

This came after a committee set up by the Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, pursuant to Article 146(4) of the Constitution, to investigate separate complaints brought against the three persons by Ghanaian citizens, recommended their removal from office.

The Committee recommended their removal on the basis of stated misbehavior and incompetence, pursuant to Article 146 (1) of the Constitution.

Charlotte Osei breached procurement laws in the award of several contracts in her three-year period at the helm of affairs, prior to the 2016 elections.

The Deputy Commissioners were also found guilty of procurement breaches and in some cases financial malfeasance.
