Wake up Sekondi-Takoradi: For how long will lives perish on the Queen of Peace – Kansawrodo highway?

Until someone close or dear to you is lost through a horrific accident on the Queen of Peace –Kansawrodo highway in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, it will often be the usual reaction of how people exclaim ‘Oh very sad!’ anytime the media reports of death on that stretch.

The stretch which is regularly used by tipper trucks and most of the private vehicles in the Metropolis has become a death trap. The alarming part of it is that over 60 lives have been lost on that stretch since JustMoh Construction moved its earth moving equipment from that road after finishing its work.

Last week Saturday (1st June, 2019), a 29 year old Orsam Staffer and a father of 6 month old baby, Nathaniel Hammond was buried at the Ketan cemetery. Mr. Hammond together with two others; a Taxi Driver and his daughter died through a horrific accident on that stretch on Sunday May 19, 2019.

The extended family of the mother who together with her three children died on that stretch would be ushered into a bad memory moment if details of the accident is outlined in this report. The parents of a 13 year old Student who was knocked down by a speeding car and died instantly in front of the Jemima Hospital would have sleepless nights if this article dwells on how he died on that stretch.

For such a highway to have no traffic regulating points appears as if it is a strategy to cut down the population of the Oil City. For such a highway that hosts schools like Queen of Peace, Kingsbury International School, Royal Pearl School, amongst others, parents and guardians from Monday to Friday cannot have sound mind until they see their wards with their two eyes.

For those who use that stretch daily, ‘Amen’ to their prayers is not said without adding that “God please guard me on this road.”

For how long will we sit and watch as statistics of death through accidents in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis increase as a result of that stretch which has no strategy to control speeding vehicles? Would an overpass at key places on that stretch be the answer to stop cars from knocking down people on that stretch or a traffic light would do the magic?

I just don’t want to say we are not angry enough! Wake up Sekondi-Takoradi, Wake up!
