Transport operators meet today over fare increment

Transport operators are meeting today, Thursday, May 5, 2022, to determine increments in transport fares.

The operators say they must increase transport fares to save their businesses.

The announcement by driver union, the Ghana Road Transport Union (GPRTU) comes after the comments by President Akufo-Addo during the May Day celebrations that government cannot do anything about the demands by the organized labour and the transport unions for the reduction of fuel prices in the country.

The Industrial Relations Officer of GPRTU, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, made the revelations to Alfred Ocansey on 3FM’s Sunrise on Thursday.

“It’s unfortunate the President came out with that statement because it is too much for us as professional drivers. We have no choice. Our people are still on our neck so we are going to increase transport fares else we can’t survive”.

Alhaji Moro explained that “it will cripple the business that we are doing if we don’t increase fares”.

“If we don’t, we will be folding up one after the other”.

He assured the increment “will be something reasonable. We are waiting for the government to intervene. If the government does not intervene we will go out with the increment and we are meeting today because yesterday, we were not in the office”.
