Sekondi-Takoradi: 30 landlords arraigned before court for failing to provide toilet facility for tenants

In Ghana, one out of 5 people defecates openly while only one in 7 households in the West African communities has toilet facilities.

Ghanaian law requires landlords to provide toilet facilities for their tenants with the associated penalties for defaulters but over the years, authorities have relaxed the enforcement of this law.

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has however decided to crack the whip on errant landlords and landladies with some 30 landlords being arraigned before the court by the environmental health department of the STMA for refusing to provide toilet facilities in their houses.

This is part of the measures taken by the Assembly to clamp down on open defecation.

Speaking to Skyy Headline News the Assistant Environmental Health Officer in charge of analysis Aaron Quansah revealed the Assembly will do all in its quest to eradicate the menace of open defecation.

He however mentioned that the STMA through the Twin City in Sustainable Project will be assisting such landlords with financial support to provide toilet facilities to their tenants and encouraged landlords and landladies to take advantage of the project since it’s unlawful to put up residential apartments without making provision for toilets.
