A senior officer at the Veterinary Services Department, Dr Benjamin Kissi Sasu has warned that food from animals in Ghana may be exposing people to hidden health risks.
Speaking on Bullet TV and monitored by MyNewsGh ahead of World Veterinary Day, the officer said poor practices in animal treatment are contributing to antimicrobial resistance.
“The eggs coming out from the farm, how many people are eating that? If you don’t check, they may contain antibiotic residue,” he said.
He stressed that misuse of drugs in animals could make infections harder to treat.
“If the microbes get to a point where drugs no longer work, then we have a serious problem,” he added.
Dr Sasu also pointed out that most human infections have links to animals.
