Commercial sex workers resumes work at Circle despite Regional Minister’s directive

Commercial sex workers along the Kwame Nkrumah ‘circle’ railway line are back to work barely two months after the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Kwatei Titus Glover warned against any attempt to reconstruct structures serving as brothels.

At about 4:00pm on June 5, 2024, a ravaging inferno razed down hundreds of wooden structures serving as brothels for commercial sex workers along the Accra-Achimota railway at the Kwame Nkrumah ‘circle’ enclave. Their business was interrupted as a result.

Attempt to reconstruct the brothels was aborted after the Nii Kwartei Titus Glover visited the fire scene and warned them to keep off the land.

He said “it is sad that people are living under this condition. I have directed that I don’t want anybody to live here anymore.”

Mr Glover further indicated that “as the Regional Minister and the Head of the Regional Security Council, it is our responsibility to ensure that everyone is protected.”

Two months on, the sex workers are back, and more brothels are being constructed.

Minors are also actively involved in the sex transaction here. Spaces reserved as buffer for the shuttle service have been encroached upon by the sex workers.

Water courses and gutters have been filled and make-shift structures erected.

At the enclave, there are two businesses going on there; the commercial sex work and the group constructing and renting brothels for use by the sex workers.

Some of the sex workers affected by the fire outbreak have relocated to the Odaw drain area as a squatting community generating volumes of filth.

Garbage generated by the sex workers here are left uncollected and frequently washed into the drain during downpour.

The Ghana Railways Authority, which owns the land in question will have to be proactive in sanitizing activities along the railway.
