Whilst the Food and Drugs Authority is fighting vigorously against the abuse of Tramadol, a pain killer that has been very widespread in the country in recent times, there is yet another case of a drug being abused by youth of Sekondi-Takoradi.
The drug, Letalin is believed to stimulates the abusers even more intensely.
LETALIN is a cough mixture that is commonly sold at over-the-counter medicine shops popularly known as drug stores.
An over-the-counter medicine seller who wants to remain anonymous tells Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson though Letalin also contains the same amount of stimulant called Diphen, it is relatively cheaper among the cough mixtures.
The drug which is sold at GHc3 on the average is currently said to be in high demand in the Twin City and as a result, some Petty traders especially around the Sekondi beach have also taken stock of large quantities and selling them at about GHc5 to the youth.
The mixture which is supposed to be consumed by a normal coughing person within at least a week is said to be consumed by the abusers at a go.
Some over-the-counter medicine sellers reveal that they have intentionally inflated the price but the abusers still patronise them.
Pharmacists are warming the health implications of such abuse could be very dire and consequential.
